Today is AIDS Awareness Day. Its amazing to see 141 students at the College of Medicine playing a small part in ending the stigma around the disease. The AIDS Awareness wall represents our unity in the health care profession dedicated to see people with the disease linked to care and receive adequate treatment, as well as eliminating the stigma and negative attitudes towards HIV positive patients. People living with HIV can live longer than they ever could before, the rates of mother to child HIV transmission can be completely eliminated with treatment, and there is free anonymous testing of the disease. There is no reason for society to be afraid of the disease or to ostracize those who have it. Lets continue to educate people on the facts about the disease and end the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS.
