You have the power to give life! Register to donate stem cells and join the movement today! Needed most urgently: diverse males age 17-35. Also needed: diverse females age 17-35.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, January 19, from 12:30-5:30, you can join the One Match registry in the E wing of Health Sciences.
All it takes is 10 minutes to fill out a forms and swab your cheeks to be added to the registry. There is a less than 1% chance of being a match for someone in need, but if you are, you could save the life of a patient who has a leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, aplastic anemia, immunodeficiency, metabolic disorders, thalassemia, or sickle cell disease.
Only 25% of the Canadian registry is made up of non-Caucasian individuals and patients are much more likely of finding a match within their own ethnicity, as matching is dependent on HLA typing. Less than 25% of patients in need will find a match within their family; 75% look to an unrelated donor. Even if you are not eligible to donate blood, it is very likely that you will be eligible to join the stem cell and marrow registry.
