CFMS FAQ

What is the CFMS?

The Canadian Federation of Medical students (CFMS) is the organization representing over 8,000 medical students from 14 Canadian medical student societies. The CFMS represents Canadian medical students to the public, the federal government, and other national medical organizations.

How can I get involved with the CFMS?

There are many ways to get involved with the CFMS! The CFMS has elected positions that you can run for directly, including positions on the CFMS executive, officer positions, and positions in the Global Health Program or the Government Affairs and Advocacy Committee. You can also apply to be a member of various CFMS external committees, such as the education committee, media committee, and much more!

Positions that are run through the SMSS elections are SMSS President, VP External Jr/Sr, and Global Health Liaison Jr/Sr. Students in these 5 positions are both SMSS council members as well as CFMS-involved members. In particular, the VPs External are the CFMS Representatives at the University of Saskatchewan. The SMSS can also help you become involved with the CFMS through events such as annual lobby day, global health exchanges, and the AGM/SGM.

What is the AGM/SGM?

The CFMS Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Spring General Meeting (SGM) are opportunities for medical students from across Canada to get together and discuss important medical education, advocacy, global health, wellness issues, and more. The next meeting will be the Annual General Meeting in Ottawa from September 22-24, 2017.

Who attends the AGM/SGM?

The AGM/SGM are open to all medical students. The VPs External, Global Health Liaisons, and the incoming and outgoing SMSS Presidents receive funding to attend the AGM/SGM. All other students are encouraged to attend and can apply for funding through the CFMS-MD Financial Travel Awards as well as the Dean’s CFMS Travel Awards.

What are position papers?

Often during CFMS General Meetings, delegates bring forward resolutions and position papers – documents that discuss the stance of the CFMS pertaining to issues of importance. For example, at the last general meeting, position papers regarding wellness and Indigenous health were passed. Position paper submissions are open to any medical student and must be submitted prior to a deadline (generally several weeks before the general meeting). If you have an idea for a position paper, let your CFMS Reps know and they can put you in contact with people who can provide support from the CFMS or other medical students from across Canada.

How do I stay updated with the CFMS?

Check out the SMSS website for periodic updates with the CFMS Communiqué. Also, please visit http://www.cfms.org/ for all other information including news, discounts, resources and prizes!

How do I make a CFMS account?

Register for a CFMS account using the sign-up code distributed to your class. Signing up for an account gives you access to the CFMS’ CaRMS interview database, elective review database, discounts, advocacy toolkits and much more. If you do not know the sign-up code, contact your CFMS Reps.

Who do I contact for further questions?

There are two CFMS Representatives from every medical school. These positions are filled by the SMSS VP External Jr/Sr at the U of S. Please contact them for any CFMS-related inquiries.
